A visit to a manufacturer in Thailand (August 2005)

Silk is obtained from the cocoons of the silkworm (Bombyx mori)

When the silkworm becomes a butterfly, she bites herself a way out of the cocoon. The get long threads it's necessary to kill the caterpillar before she pupates.

A cocoon contains three different silktypes. The silk from the outher layer is rather rough.

After winding the silk of the cocoons it will be washed to remove the glue (sericine). After that the wires will be washed.

In Thailand they sometimes still use natural products like leaves, bark and herbs to color the silk.

The looms didn't change much over generations.

Some weavers work at home, but mostly it's a whole community that works together.

To make a pattern like this they need a lot of craftmenship.
